How a quiet Hyderabad neighborhood and a grand palace come alive with the calls of over 50 wild peacocks every rainy season.
HYDERABAD — As the monsoon clouds roll over the Deccan Plateau, the rocky hillocks surrounding Falaknuma undergo a breathtaking transformation. Rain-soaked soil turns into a carpet of vibrant green, setting the stage for one of Hyderabad’s most charming, lesser-known natural spectacles: the return of wild peacocks.
During the early morning hours, the distinct calls of peacocks echo across the hillsides. With their brilliant blue and green feathers fully spread against the fresh post-rain backdrop, the birds present a stunning sight. Occasionally, they venture beyond the rocky slopes, wandering through the nearby streets or onto the sprawling, historic grounds of the Falaknuma Palace.
For locals, the movement of these birds between the ancient palace premises and surrounding neighborhoods highlights a rare, beautiful blend of grand history and wild nature.
A Coexistence Built on Respect
While urban expansion continues across Hyderabad, the communities nestled at the foot of the hills—including Madina Colony, Bibi Ka Chasma, and Fatimanagar—have formed a unique bond with their feathered neighbors.
Locals estimate that more than 50 peacocks inhabit these rocky slopes. Rather than disturbing the birds when they stroll into colony lanes, residents actively protect them.
“We estimate there are over 50 peacocks living in the hillocks,” says Mohammed Ahmed, a resident of Bibi Ka Chasma. “You can hear their calls clearly every morning. They even wander into our colony lanes at times, but no one disturbs them—people love seeing them around and make sure they stay safe.”
The monsoon season provides the birds with better shelter and an abundance of food on the greening hills, bringing them out into the open far more frequently.
“The peacocks are much more active after it rains,” explains Syed Irfan, a resident of Madina Colony. “Both kids and adults love gathering from a safe distance to watch them. We view them as part of our community, and everyone takes care not to disturb or harm them.”
Living Heritage Amid a Growing City
While Falaknuma is world-famous for its opulent 19th-century palace, the surrounding hills carry a different kind of treasure—a living, breathing natural legacy that thrives right alongside human settlement.
“Falaknuma is famous for its palace, but these hillocks are just as special because of the peacocks,” notes Mohammed Yousuf, a local resident. “Seeing them roam freely near both the estate and our neighborhoods is truly a wonderful sight.”
As the rains continue to fall, the early morning peacock calls remain a comforting, familiar soundtrack for the people of Falaknuma. To them, these magnificent birds are far more than seasonal visitors; they are a symbol of nature’s resilience, proving that even in a rapidly growing metropolis, wildlife and heritage can quietly, beautifully flourish together.
