Across the city, apartment associations and everyday homeowners are installing recharge pits and injection wells to revive the groundwater table before summer hits.
When building owners Vinod and Bhashyam set out to construct their property in Hyderabad, they could have done what many do: install the bare minimum rainwater harvesting structure required to tick the box for an official Occupancy Certificate (OC), and call it a day.
Instead, they dug four massive recharge pits—each measuring six feet long, four feet wide, and six feet deep—fed directly by dedicated rooftop pipelines.
By going well beyond municipal requirements, their goal wasn’t just regulatory compliance; it was ensuring their borewells wouldn’t run dry when the blazing summer heat returns to the Deccan plateau.
A Citizen-Led Shift Across the City
Their story is part of a growing trend across Hyderabad. From older neighborhoods like Gandhinagar and Sanathnagar to tech-corridor hubs like Kondapur, Manikonda, and Yousufguda, apartment welfare associations and residents are taking matters into their own hands.
Recognizing these efforts, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) issued a public commendation praising communities in over a dozen localities—including Bachupally, Nagole, Motinagar, Hayathnagar, and Srinagar Colony—for setting up recharge pits and deep injection wells.

The Water Board pointed out a crucial shift in mindset: residents are no longer viewing rainwater structures as a bureaucratic hurdle, but as a critical personal investment against future droughts.
Why Injection Wells and Recharge Pits Matter
Hyderabad’s rapid urban expansion has paved over vast areas of natural soil that once absorbed monsoon rains. Today, heavy downpours often turn into sudden surface flooding, washing millions of liters of usable water down stormwater drains while underground aquifers remain depleted.
