From Assembly entrances to zero-tax perks, how Hyderabad is dodging the “Delhi Fate” one electric mile at a time.
HYDERABAD — Usually, the sound of a VIP convoy at the Telangana Assembly is a roar of high-displacement engines. But this Monday morning, March 30, was different. It was quiet.
Stepping out of a sleek electric vehicle, Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar made more than just an entrance; he made a statement. Accompanied by MLA Danam Nagender, the Minister’s arrival in an EV was the living embodiment of a policy that is quickly making Telangana the greenest hub in India.
Dodging the “Delhi Fate”
“We formulated this EV policy with one clear intention: to maintain Hyderabad’s Air Quality Index,” Prabhakar said, addressing the media. “We don’t want our city to go the way of Delhi.”
The Minister’s words refer to GO No. 41, the administrative “magic wand” signed by Special Chief Secretary Vikas Raj back in November 2024. That order didn’t just suggest a change; it paved the way for it by offering a 100% exemption on road tax and registration fees for all new EVs until December 31, 2026.
The Perk of the Plug
It’s not just the environment that’s seeing green—so are the bank accounts of the state’s workforce. Under the new initiative, over five lakh government employees are being offered a 10-20% discount on EV purchases.
The Minister took a moment to thank the pioneers of this transition, specifically naming Tata Motors, Ola Electric, and Gravton Motors for their manufacturing efforts. By publicly acknowledging these partners, the government sent a clear signal to the rest of the industry: The door is open for those ready to innovate.
Beyond the Commute: The Corporate Bus Wave
The vision extends far beyond personal cars. The government is now doubling down on electric buses, specifically those used by industries for employee transport. By providing special provisions for corporate fleets, the state is effectively cutting down the massive carbon footprint of the daily office commute.
As we move closer to the 2026 deadline for these tax holidays, the message from the Assembly today was clear: The future of Hyderabad isn’t just coming—it’s already parked in the driveway.
