From ₹2 Crore Scams to Depositor Protection: Everything You Need to Know About the New Economic Offences Wing at Neredmet
In a significant move to tighten the noose around white-collar criminals, the Malkajgiri Police Commissionerate officially launched its dedicated Economic Offences Wing (EOW) Police Station on Wednesday, April 1, 2026.
Inaugurated by Police Commissioner Avinash Mohanty at the Neredmet Police Quarters, this specialized unit marks a new era in Hyderabad’s battle against sophisticated financial crimes.
The ₹2 Crore Threshold: What Does the EOW Handle?
Not every financial dispute will land at the EOW. This unit is specifically designed to investigate “high-stakes” crimes that require expert forensic accounting and legal precision. The station will register cases involving:
- Financial Fraud & Cheating: Only cases where the defrauded amount exceeds ₹2 Crore.
- Criminal Breach of Trust: High-value misappropriation of funds.
- Fabrication of Documents: Forgery and white-collar identity theft involving significant assets.
Protecting the Common Man: The TSPDFE Act
Beyond corporate fraud, the EOW is now the primary guardian for victims of fraudulent investment schemes. Under the Telangana State Protection of Depositors of Financial Establishments (TSPDFE) Act, 1999 (recently amended in 2023), the EOW will take over cases involving:
- Amounts above ₹1 Crore.
- Chit fund scams, “double-your-money” schemes, and fraudulent non-banking financial companies (NBFCs).
Meet the Team: Specialized Leadership
Commissioner Avinash Mohanty formally operationalized the station by making the first General Diary (GD) entry. The unit is not just a building; it is a task force of seasoned investigators:
- Supervision: DCP (Road Safety) K. Manohar (holding additional charge).
- Core Team: Two Assistant Commissioners of Police (P. Sathaiah and C. Anjaiah) and three experienced Inspectors (K. Bhaskar, A. Surya Nayak, and K. Ravi Kumar).
Why This Matters for Hyderabad Residents
As Hyderabad’s real estate and tech sectors boom in 2026, financial crimes have become more complex. By separating these cases from regular local police stations, the Malkajgiri Commissionerate ensures that:
- Investigations are Faster: Specialized officers don’t have to juggle “Law and Order” duties with complex audit trails.
- Higher Conviction Rates: Professional handling of “fabrication of documents” charges makes for a tighter case in court.
- Direct Oversight: The Commissioner of Police can personally direct the EOW to take up any case of significant public importance.
Legal Tip: If you are a victim of a fraud below the ₹1–2 Crore mark, you should still approach your local Law & Order police station or the Cyber Crime Wing if the transaction happened online.
