From 20 calls to 250 daily, Arham Animal Ambulance is the silent guardian of the city’s voiceless.
In the bustling, high-speed corridors of Hyderabad—from the tech hubs of Gachibowli to the historic lanes of the Old City—a new sound has become a familiar comfort: the siren of the Arham Animal Ambulance.
While sirens usually signal an emergency for humans, this specific lifesaver is dedicated to the four-legged and feathered residents who often suffer in the shadows of urban development. Launched by the Pune-based Arham Yuva Seva Group (AYSG), this free service has quietly transformed from a modest project into an indispensable urban utility.
A Surge in Compassion
When the service first arrived in Hyderabad, the team received barely 20 calls a day. It was a quiet start for a massive mission. However, as stories of successful rescues spread across social media and neighborhood WhatsApp groups, that number skyrocketed.
Today, the team manages an average of 200 to 250 distress calls every single day. Whether it’s a hit-and-run victim in Budwel or an ailing bird in Secunderabad, the ambulance is often the only thing standing between a fatal injury and a second chance at life.
Healing on the Spot
What makes Arham unique is its focus on on-ground response. Unlike traditional clinics that require an animal to be transported—a delay that often proves fatal—Arham’s paravets, like Vijay Sharma, provide immediate first aid on the spot.
“Situations like these are extremely sensitive,” Sharma notes, recounting a recent rescue of a day-old puppy. “But timely intervention can make all the difference.”
By treating animals where they are found, the team reduces trauma and ensures that even the most “invisible” animals—stray dogs, cattle, and birds—receive professional-grade care.
Bridging the Gap
In a rapidly urbanizing city, the risks to stray animals are constant. From traffic accidents to illnesses exacerbated by the lack of clean water, the “veterinary healthcare gap” is wide. Operating free of cost, Arham Animal Ambulance fills this void, having attended to over 900 major cases since its launch in the city.
