Hyderabad: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday virtually inaugurated the redeveloped Begumpet railway station—an all-women-operated facility—as well as the upgraded Karimnagar and Warangal railway stations in Telangana.
Union Minister for Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy, Telangana Minister for Roads and Buildings Komatireddy Venkat Reddy, and South Central Railway (SCR) General Manager Arun Kumar Jain were among the dignitaries present at the event.
Redeveloped at an estimated cost of ₹26.55 crore under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, Begumpet station has been transformed into a modern transit hub that reflects Telangana’s rich cultural heritage. The renovation includes several passenger-friendly amenities such as escalators, lifts, spacious waiting halls, modern toilets, and dedicated facilities for differently-abled commuters.
Adding a local touch, the Indian Roller (Pala Pitta)—Telangana’s state bird—has been installed as a symbolic centrepiece. The station also features illuminated lighting, landscaped greenery, water elements, and clear signage designed to elevate the overall commuting experience.
Begumpet station is uniquely operated entirely by women—from station masters and ticket clerks to RPF constables and booking staff—a practice that has been in place for over six years. A dedicated surveillance system is also in place to enhance the safety of women passengers.
The upgraded facility now includes two lifts, four escalators, improved platform shelters, and enhanced signage to assist passengers. SCR officials noted that the project is not just about infrastructure development but about creating benchmarks in safety, comfort, and inclusivity.
Catering to over 15,000 commuters daily, Begumpet stands as one of Hyderabad’s busiest suburban stations, after Secunderabad, Hyderabad, and Kacheguda.
