Hyderabad traffic police have intensified their efforts to curb the dangerous practice of using mobile phones while driving, booking a staggering 80,555 cases between January 1 and October 12, 2025. During a special enforcement drive conducted on October 13 and 14 alone, an additional 2,345 motorists were penalized for this violation.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) D. Joel Davis issued a stern warning to motorists, emphasizing that “No call is more important than a life.” He highlighted that using phones on the move distracts drivers, reduces reaction times, and is a leading cause of road accidents. Despite repeated warnings and fines, this hazardous behavior remains prevalent on Hyderabad roads.
The penalty for handheld mobile phone use while driving in Hyderabad currently stands at Rs 5,000, with higher fines and legal consequences for repeat offenders. To reinforce road safety, the traffic police have deployed special enforcement teams across busy junctions and corridors, supported by AI-powered surveillance technology.
Hyderabad Police have also launched the #SafeRideChallenge, a social media campaign encouraging riders and drivers to promote safe driving habits by sharing photos or videos of themselves wearing helmets or fastening seat belts before their journeys. The initiative seeks to create widespread awareness, especially among young commuters.
Citizens are urged to cooperate with law enforcement by reporting traffic violations through official police social media channels or via dedicated helplines: Traffic Helpline 9010203626 and e-Challan helpdesk 8712661690.
The Hyderabad police’s firm crackdown reflects their commitment to reducing road accidents and protecting all commuters, making the city’s roads safer for everyone.
