Remembering the 1908 Musi River Floods Tragedy: Memorial Under the Great Tamarind Tree
To mark the 117th anniversary of the devastating 1908 Musi River floods, the Forum for a Better Hyderabad is organizing a memorial and solidarity gathering under the Great Tamarind Tree at Osmania General Hospital, Afzalgunj, on September 25 at 10:30 a.m.
The catastrophic flood of September 1908 claimed thousands of lives and caused significant destruction across Hyderabad. This tragic event served as a pivotal moment in the city’s history, prompting comprehensive urban planning and development initiatives that transformed Hyderabad from a struggling settlement into a modern urban center.
For 17 years, Forum for a Better Hyderabad, in collaboration with the Centre for Deccan Studies and civil society organizations, has held this memorial to honor the lives lost and celebrate the remarkable tree that saved over 150 lives during the floods.
The event also reflects ongoing efforts to preserve Hyderabad’s heritage and promote sustainable urban development for the city’s future.
