On March 8, 250,000 women across 250 locations will sprint toward a new era for Indian sports—and our city is at the heart of the movement.
Hyderabad has always been a city of champions. From the badminton courts of Gachibowli to the cricket grounds of Uppal, the “City of Pearls” has a knack for polishing raw talent into global icons. But this week, the spotlight isn’t just on the superstars—it’s on every girl in every basti and district who has ever dreamed of running.
This International Women’s Day (March 8), Hyderabad joins a massive national movement. Under the Union Sports Ministry’s ASMITA programme—Achieving Sports Milestone by Inspiring Women Through Action—a record-breaking athletics league is set to take over 250 locations across India. And right here in our backyard, the energy is electric.
The Magic of 250 Locations
Imagine 2,50,000 women across India hitting the track at the exact same time. That is the scale Minister of State Smt. Raksha Nikhil Khadse announced this Monday. For Hyderabad, this isn’t just another government event; it’s a district-level scout for the next generation of Olympians.
The league focuses on the pure speed of track events: 100m, 200m, and 400m sprints. Whether you are a “pro” in the Under-18 category or a mother in the 18+ bracket rediscovered her love for the track, ASMITA is providing the lane.
“Readiness begins at the district level. Hosting the Olympic Games requires more than infrastructure… it requires trained human resources in every district of India.” — Smt. Raksha Nikhil Khadse
Why This Matters for Hyderabad
While our city is known for its world-class facilities, the true heart of ASMITA lies in its reach. This initiative is designed to find talent in the “farthest corners”—from the tribal hamlets of the North-east to the rural districts of Telangana.
By bringing in certified women technical officials and conducting development workshops at each venue, the program is doing more than just finding runners—it’s building a sporting ecosystem. It’s about ensuring that when India bids for the 2036 Olympics, we aren’t just hosting the games; we are dominating them.
The “ASMITA” Legacy
Since 2021, ASMITA has quietly become a powerhouse:
- 3,00,000+ women participants so far.
- 2,600+ leagues conducted across 34 sports.
- 700 cities reached, including areas once cut off by social and geographical barriers.
How to Cheer on Our Girls
This March 8, as you celebrate the women in your life, keep an ear out for the starting pistol. The ASMITA league is a reminder that empowerment isn’t just a slogan—it’s a 100-meter dash toward a future where every girl in Hyderabad and beyond has the “hand-holding” she needs to take her first step into sports.
