Hyderabad: Nehru Zoological Park, popularly known as the zoo park, is all set to host India’s largest tunnel aquarium within its premises.
The aquarium is being developed under the Mir Alam Development Programme launched by the Telangana government.
Change in Plans After Review
Originally, officials had proposed constructing the aquarium as a lakefront attraction or an external tunnel, but the plans were revised after a detailed review.
However, after careful assessment, officials concluded that building the aquarium within the Hyderabad zoo park would be more cost-effective and practical.
Tunnel Aquarium at Hyderabad Zoo Park
The upcoming tunnel aquarium at Nehru Zoological Park is being designed to meet global standards and will span three acres within the zoo premises.
The ambitious ₹1,200 crore project aims to showcase a wide range of aquatic species and will be developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. The final layout and species selection will be determined based on the feasibility report and the proposals received through the PPP framework.
Work on the Hyderabad tunnel aquarium is expected to commence later this year, with completion targeted for late 2026.
Once completed, the aquarium is set to become a major tourist attraction, offering visitors a one-of-a-kind underwater experience and significantly enhancing the appeal of Nehru Zoological Park in Hyderabad.
