When people think of Hyderabad, they usually picture the tech hubs of HITEC City, the historic Charminar, or a steaming plate of world-famous biryani. But for one thrilling week, all eyes turned to the ripples of Hussainsagar Lake, where the city cemented its status as a premier global hub for competitive water sports.
The inaugural ILCA Open India International Sailing Championship, held alongside the Yachting Association of India’s (YAI) 40th Hyderabad Sailing Week 2026, officially came to a grand close on Saturday, July 18. It wasn’t just another local regatta; it was a milestone event that brought an international fleet to the heart of Telangana.
A Historic Fleet on Iconic Waters
For four decades, the EME Sailing Association (EMESA) has been quietly turning Hussainsagar into a breeding ground for elite athletes. But this year, the stakes were elevated.
By collaborating with the International Laser Class Association (ILCA), the skies over the lake filled with the sails of 124 elite competitors.

• 124 Total Sailors battling the shifting winds.
• 19 Female athletes paving the way in women's and girls' divisions.
• 19 Elite sailing clubs represented across military, naval, and civilian sectors.
• 3 Major competitive classes: ILCA-4, ILCA-6, and ILCA-7.
The competition cut across three primary boat classes, featuring grueling tactical battles in the heavy-rig ILCA-7, the versatile ILCA-6 (for men and women), and the youth-focused ILCA-4 (for boys and girls).
Nurturing the Champions of Tomorrow
The week-long event culminated in a vibrant closing ceremony presided over by Lieutenant General Neeraj Varshney, Commandant of the Military College of Electronics and Mechanical Engineering (MCEME).
As he presented trophies to the victorious sailors who conquered Hussainsagar’s notoriously tricky, shifting wind patterns, Lt. Gen. Varshney highlighted the deep legacy of the venue.
“The championship has fulfilled our vision of hosting India’s first International ILCA Open Championship at Hussainsagar,” Varshney shared, reminding the crowd that EMESA has historically produced Indian Olympians, Arjuna Awardees, and national icons.
Quoting Christopher Columbus, he left the young competitors with a powerful charge for their next maritime journeys: “If you have to cross the oceans, you have to leave the shore.”
