Devotion Alive in Hyderabad’s Historic Streets as Annual Bonalu Begins

As the first rays of dawn touched the minarets of Charminar, the historic lanes of Hyderabad’s Old City came alive with brilliant colours, reverberating drumbeats, and an overwhelming wave of faith. The annual two-day Bonalu festival officially kicked off, transforming the historic neighborhood into a vibrant canvas of culture, heritage, and intense spiritual fervor.

A Celebration Rooted in Heritage and Gratitude

From the early hours of the morning, queues stretched through the stone-paved streets leading to major shrines, including the iconic Sri Simhavahini Mahankali Temple at Lal Darwaza, as well as historic temples in Sultan Shahi, Hari Bowli, and Uppuguda.

Women dressed in traditional Pattu sarees walked barefoot, balancing elaborately decorated earthen pots—known as bonams—upon their heads. Adorned with fresh neem leaves, turmeric, vermilion, and topped with a flickering brass lamp, these offerings contained rice cooked with milk, jaggery, and curd—a sacred meal offered to Goddess Mahankali as a gesture of gratitude and prayer for health and prosperity.

Rhythm, Rituals, and Vigilant Spirits

The atmosphere throughout the Old City was electric:

• The Rhythmic Beats: Traditional Thappeta drummers set a powerful tempo that resonated through the crowded bazaars.
• The Potharaju Dancers: Men representing Potharaju—the fierce brother of the Goddess—danced with whips, turmeric-smeared bodies, and resounding anklets to keep negative energies at bay.
• Elaborate Safety: To ensure smooth passage for the thousands of devotees, law enforcement deployed extensive crowd management systems and security personnel across crucial transit corridors.

The Road to Nayapool: Looking Ahead to the Grand Procession

The festivities wrap up with the grand Ghatam procession. Copper pots decorated to represent the Goddess will pass through the iconic streets of Shahalibanda and Charminar before culminating at the Nayapool immersion site along the Musi River.

For locals and visitors alike, Bonalu isn’t merely a festival—it is the living heart of Hyderabad’s unique syncretic culture and timeless traditions.
