Hyderabadstories Post: Musi River Beautification Project Accelerated with ADB Support, Land Acquisition in Progress
The Telangana government has received a major boost for its ambitious Musi River beautification project with a loan sanction from the Asian Development Bank (ADB). This financial backing has prompted the state to fast-track project implementation, including speeding up land acquisition processes essential for the river’s revival and transformation into a vibrant urban space.
Project Overview
The extensive project, estimated to cost over ₹5,500 crore, is divided into two main phases:
-
Phase 1A: A 9.2 km stretch from Himayat Sagar to Bapu Ghat, costing around ₹2,500 crore
-
Phase 1B: Covering the area from Osman Sagar to Bapu Ghat, with an estimated cost of ₹3,141 crore
The initial efforts focus on cleaning the Musi River by deepening it by 2 meters and removing accumulated waste, while simultaneously developing infrastructure like retaining walls, flood control embankments, pumping stations, and flood monitoring systems to prevent flooding and improve river health.
Land Acquisition and Development
A total of approximately 199.89 hectares of land will be acquired for these phases, with around 137.72 hectares consisting of private land and 62.17 hectares belonging to government ownership. Authorities assure the acquisition process will follow transparency and provide fair compensation under the Land Acquisition Act of 2013.
The project includes creating a 50-meter-wide buffer zone on each side of the river, which will be converted into green belts spanning around 109 hectares. Additional plans include developing the riverfront into a recreational and cultural hub with amphitheatres, malls, entertainment parks, kiosks, vendor zones, and street lighting to foster a night-time economy.
Economic Impact and Employment
The Musi Riverfront project is expected to engage over 3,000 workers during its construction and will create around 100 permanent jobs upon completion. This comprehensive development aims to not only rejuvenate the river but also boost tourism, the local economy, and provide much-needed infrastructure improvements.
Future Prospects
The final project blueprint is anticipated soon, with tenders for signature projects already called for, including the construction of iconic landmarks like the Gateway of Hyderabad near the Outer Ring Road. The government is also eyeing tourism development policies aligned with the riverfront’s cultural aspects, enhancing Hyderabad’s image as a modern yet heritage-conscious city.
With the ADB’s support and the government’s proactive steps, Musi River’s revival symbolizes a major stride toward sustainable urban development and improved quality of life for Hyderabad’s residents.
