Hyderabad: World Athletics, previously known as the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), has officially designated the 13th edition of the Hyderabad Marathon as a World Athletics ‘Basic’ level event, according to a press release on Thursday.
World Athletics is the international governing body for track and field events, overseeing the standardization of rules, certification of athletic facilities, and the recognition and management of world records.
Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy congratulated the Hyderabad Runners Society (HRS) for earning World Athletics Label recognition for the Hyderabad Marathon, bringing the city onto the World Athletics calendar. He promised to support the event in meeting all necessary World Athletics criteria.
Race Director Rajesh Vetcha expressed confidence that Hyderabad would produce some of India’s finest athletes in both amateur and elite categories in the years to come. As the second marathon in India to receive this label, this recognition places Hyderabad on the global sporting map, enhancing the city’s international standing. With only 220 marathons globally holding this label, HRS President Abhijit eagerly anticipates hosting runners from around the world.
