Four resident pachyderms enjoyed a 5-kilometer stroll and a massive 5 kg fruit cake as zoo visitors got an up-close lesson in wildlife conservation.
HYDERABAD — It isn’t every day that zoo visitors find themselves walking alongside four of the largest land mammals on Earth. But on Wednesday, August 12, the Nehru Zoological Park in Hyderabad transformed its grounds into a grand stage for World Elephant Day.
The park’s four resident Asian elephants—females Vanaja, Asha, and Sita, alongside male Vijay—stepped out of their enclosures for a memorable 5-kilometer procession across the sanctuary premises.
A Stroll Through the Grounds
Rather than remaining behind their barriers, Vanaja, Asha, Sita, and Vijay took center stage. Guided by their dedicated animal keepers, the gentle giants embarked on a sprawling 5 km walk through the zoo. Along the route, the elephants casually snacked on fresh tree branches, offering visitors an intimate look at their natural behaviors.
Zoo guests were permitted to walk along a safe perimeter, giving families and children a rare opportunity to observe the majestic creatures up close. Throughout the stroll, zoo education officers briefed the crowd on the essential role elephants play in maintaining forest biodiversity and ecological balance.
A Feast Fit for a Jumbo
The highlight of the celebration came when the four-legged guests of honor reached their dining destination. Zoo kitchen staff and animal keepers surprised the herd with a specially crafted 5 kg jumbo cake for each elephant.
Made from a base of cooked rice and ragi, the multi-tiered culinary creation was packed with a colorful spread of fresh produce:
- Fruits: Bananas, apples, pineapples, oranges, and watermelons
- Vegetables & Greens: Cucumbers, carrots, and sugarcane
- Nutritional Extras: Whole coconuts
Education Meets Conservation
Highlighting the spirit of the day, Deputy Curator J. Muralidhar emphasized that hosting engaging events around wildlife is vital to building a conservation-minded community.
“We take immense pride in celebrating World Elephant Day,” Muralidhar shared. “Events like these allow us to step beyond routine zoo visits and actively educate citizens on why protecting these magnificent animals and their habitats is critical to our shared ecosystem.”
The day concluded with smiles from visitors and full bellies for Vanaja, Asha, Sita, and Vijay—a fitting tribute to four of Hyderabad’s most beloved wild ambassadors.
