Hyderabad: The twin reservoirs — Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar — have once again turned lifelines for the city. The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) is drawing water from the reservoirs to meet consumers’ demand due to soaring temperatures.
The water board was planning to draw 40 million gallons of water (25 million gallons from Osman Sagar and 15 million gallons from Himayat Sagar), but is currently drawing 19 million gallons from Osman Sagar and 7 million gallons from Himayat Sagar.
“Three vertical water treatment plants at Gandipet, Kokapet and Puppalaguda with three million litre capacity are being constructed at the Osman Sagar conduit. Once the work is completed and they are put to use, we will be able to draw 40 mgd from the twin reservoirs,” a senior official told TOI.
Drawing water from two other sources — Krishna (270 million gallons) and Godavari (172 million gallons) — is also continuing, but the necessity of additional drawals from the two reservoirs is now inevitable, officials said.
On April 1, the water board supplied 566 million gallons and a fortnight later, the quantity was increased to 575 million gallons. In March also as the water board had to increase supplies. On March 1, the board supplied 537 million gallons and increased quantity to 568 million gallons by the month-end. Meanwhile, officials said tanker bookings have come down in last few days. Fabrication of 72 mini tankers has already started, and the plan is to launch them next week. tnn
