A Royal Prelude to Global Glamour: Smita Sabharwal’s Vision for Miss World 2025
Amidst the regal splendour of Chowmahalla Palace — under the glow of its magnificent chandeliers and the echoes of the Nizams’ enduring legacy — IAS officer Smita Sabharwal, Secretary to the Government, Youth Advancement, Tourism & Culture, walks through the grand venue ahead of the Gala Dinner for the 72nd Miss World pageant, set to take place this May.
Her presence is as poised as the palace itself. As she moves briskly through the halls, pausing to fine-tune details and ensure a flawless welcome for every guest, one thing becomes clear: every element of the event has been curated with thought and precision. In the midst of preparations, Smita Sabharwal takes a moment to sit down for an exclusive conversation, offering a glimpse into the vision behind one of the year’s most anticipated global events.
You’ve been curating events for the 72nd Miss World. Could you tell us about the various experiences we can look forward to?
“Chowmahalla Palace is one of Hyderabad’s most iconic and historic landmarks, and we’re honoured to host part of the Miss World experience here. With over 300 years of heritage, this palace served as the official seat of the Asaf Jahi dynasty and was once a hub for royal ceremonies and state affairs. It’s a fitting venue to showcase the timeless elegance of Telangana to a global audience.
The Gala Dinner is just one of several immersive experiences we’re curating. This edition of Miss World goes far beyond the traditional pageant format. Our aim is to unfold a month-long cultural celebration that not only highlights the contestants but also places a spotlight on the tourism potential of Telangana. Most Miss World events typically revolve around the contestants’ stories — and while that remains central, we’re broadening the lens to include the vibrant tapestry of our state.
From the majestic Ananthagiri Hills and enchanting waterfalls to dense tiger reserves and untouched rural beauty, Telangana is a treasure trove of experiences waiting to be discovered. Through this global platform, we’re inviting the world not only to witness the pageant in Hyderabad but to linger a little longer — to explore, to connect, and to be captivated by everything Telangana has to offer.”
