Hyderabad: As part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) on January 8 announced a mega e-waste cleanup drive across 300 wards in the city, scheduled for January 12 and 13.
The drive aims to ensure the systematic collection and proper disposal of discarded electronic items, while also creating widespread awareness about responsible e-waste disposal across residential, commercial, and public spaces.
The collection will cover a wide range of items, including household appliances, IT and telecommunications equipment, batteries, UPS systems, and other consumer electronics. According to a press release issued by the GHMC, the civic body will carry out the drive in coordination with Hyderabad Integrated Municipal Solid Waste (HiMSW).
Hyderabad Integrated Municipal Solid Waste (HiMSW) will deploy branded collection vehicles across all circles. The collected e-waste will be safely transported to the authorised processing facility at Dundigal for scientific recycling, in compliance with national e-waste management rules.
To ensure maximum public participation, an awareness campaign will begin on January 9. The campaign will involve sanitation workers, Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and Self-Help Groups. Temporary collection points have been identified in each ward to facilitate smooth operations during the two-day drive.
GHMC Commissioner R V Karnan has directed Zonal and Deputy Commissioners to mobilise all stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of the programme. The civic body has also instructed its Public Relations wing to ensure extensive media outreach.
Officials reiterated that proper e-waste management is crucial for safeguarding public health and urged citizens to actively participate in making Hyderabad a cleaner and greener city.
