Hyderabad: The Telangana government inaugurated the Vana Mahotsavam program in Hyderabad on Monday with a goal to plant 3 million saplings in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) area.
According to the Forest Survey of India, Hyderabad’s green cover has increased from 33.15 to 81.81 square kilometers, showcasing the city’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
Minister for Transport Ponnam Prabhakar, accompanied by GHMC officials, kicked off the event by planting saplings at Ramanthapur Government Polytechnic College.
Minister Prabhakar emphasized the program’s objective of building a healthier environment for future generations. On the inaugural day, a total of 7,134 saplings were planted across 56 locations within 30 circles. Stressing the significance of public involvement, he encouraged everyone to plant saplings in honor of their family members and relatives to address escalating pollution levels.
City Mayor G. Vijayalakshmi mentioned that although the government’s target is 3 million saplings, the GHMC has prepared 6 million saplings, expecting greater participation based on past experiences.
The Mayor detailed the plan for the Vana Mahotsavam program, which involves planting saplings in colleges, open spaces, parks, central medians, and along roadsides.
The event was attended by Deputy Mayor Srilatha Shobhan Reddy, GHMC Commissioner Amrapali Kata, Uppal MLA B. Lakshmareddy, Zonal Commissioner Hemanth Keshav Patil, Additional Commissioner (Urban Biodiversity) Sunanda, and several corporators.
