The winter has had a toll on many in Hyderabad with several homeless people struggling to find shelter. The temperature has gone down to as low as 15 degrees Celcius in December with the poor and needy struggling on the streets of the city. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has once again came to the rescue of the homeless and plans to set up more shelters to help them combat winter.
The GHMC already runs as many as 18 temporary night shelters across Hyderabad and is planning to increase the number of shelters to accommodate more people, who are in desperate need of a roof over the head and are forced to live on the streets in winter. The GHMC works with hospitals, NGOs, and other organizations to set up these temporary shelters for the needy.
With the coronavirus pandemic not relenting down in Telanagana, the GHMC is leaving no stone unturned in ensuring the poor and homeless who become more vulnerable to the viral disease by staying outside, are protected inside temporary shelters. The temporary shelters will be operated likely till the end of January.
As per a report in Telangana Today, the GHMC is looking to set up these temporary shelters at community halls, unoccupied markets, and trusts buildings, etc. Facilities such as blankets, drinking water, mattresses, and toilets will be provided to those staying at the shelters.
The GHMC has informed the zonal offices to identify such locations where the shelters can be set up. The GHMC has been following the tradition of winter shelters for years now. The organization identifies the homeless and needy living on the streets in winter and shifts them to temporary shelters to help them avoid the struggles of living in the chilly cold weather.
